Theme statement

The laboratory is no longer the limit

For decades, the Medical Laboratory Scientist has occupied a defined, and often narrow, position within the healthcare ecosystem: a technical professional trained primarily to deliver accurate laboratory results.

That position no longer fully reflects the evolving role of the profession, nor does it capture the opportunities available to Medical Laboratory Scientists within modern healthcare.

Across Africa and around the world, Medical Laboratory Scientists are leading hospitals and laboratories, founding diagnostic companies, deploying artificial intelligence, contributing to health policy, investing in healthcare, developing innovative solutions, and driving community health impact. Yet the profession’s narrative, training, visibility, and public positioning have not evolved at the same pace.

This summit convenes young Medical Laboratory Scientists in Lagos, Africa’s commercial and innovation hub, to explore how the profession can be repositioned for a new healthcare era.

The summit will examine what it means for the MLS to move beyond being viewed primarily as a laboratory-based technical professional and increasingly be recognised as a healthcare leader, entrepreneur, innovator, investor, advocate, and community-impact driver.

Through conversations on leadership, enterprise, technology, finance, influence, and impact, the summit will explore what a repositioned profession looks like and, more importantly, what each young MLS must learn, build, pursue, and become to occupy that position.
